Steps to Crop any Image using GIMP

Objective The Objective of this tutorial is to crop the image using GIMP.

To crop the picture, you first need to download free copies available on the web, or you can use the one you already have stored on your PC.

Start GIMP if you have already installed it or if not you can download and install it from GIMP official website for free.

Step 1:

Open the desired image in GIMP.

To open an image, you need to go to file from the top menu and select open; File-->Open, or you can press CTRL+O on your keyboard to open a file. It will open an "Open Image" dialog box from where you can select the image you want to crop. Once you have your image on the canvas, you are ready to crop it.

Step 2:

Select the Area to Crop.

In this step choose "Rectangle select tool(or Press R from your keyboard)" from the toolbox - tool options and select the area from the image you want to cut. Don't bother if you are not able to hold it correctly on the first attempt as you can adjust it later. See the screenshot below to see how it works.

Step 3:

Crop the Selection.

Once you are satisfied with the selection, right-click on the selected area and from the list options select image and then crop to selection, or you can select the image from the menu bar and click on the crop to selection.

Your cropped image is ready to use now.

#Tip: The same process works to crop an image in Circle or Oval Shape. The ellipse select tool serves best when you need to select an elliptical region to crop.
