Steps to Change Eye Color in GIMP

Purpose The Purpose of this tutorial is to change the color of eyes using GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Getting Started

Step 1:

Open GIMP

Step 2:

Open image in GIMP:

File >> Open or Press CTRL+O from your keyboard.

Select the folder containing the image for which you want to change the color of eyes.

Step 3:

Duplicate the Image

The first thing we are going to do is duplicate the image. Once you duplicate or make the copy of the image, you will have 2 layers in your layer palette as specified in the screenshot below.

Step 4:

Selection of Eye Retina

Next step is to select the eye retina using the free select tool. To do so, you first need to select the layer(a duplicate layer which you just created) and select a free select tool from the toolbox – tool option or press F from your keyboard.

Once you are ready, select the eye retina from the image(Make sure to join the start and end point).

#Tip: Zoom the image if you want a better selection. Your selection is ready now, and you will see a dotted line around the eye retina.

Just hit the delete button on your keyboard, and you will see that there is a white color inside the eyes as specified beneath.

Step 5:

Fill the Selected White Area

In this step, select the Bucket fill tool(Shift+B) from the toolbox and choose the color which you want for your eye color.

I will go with RED color for my image. Once you are final with the color choice you want, fill the white area. You will now have something like this.

Step 6:

End Steps:

In the final step, you need to change the Mode(in the Layer Palette) from normal to overlay as specified beneath.

  1. This supported me a lot since it was my first time using GIMP and I REALLY wanted to edit an eye like the ones I have seen. I appreciate you very much for putting something like this out here so others can use it.
